Can the Bible be interpreted literally?
Some years back, I met and had conversation with a gentleman who was a student of Nazarene Theological Seminary at that time. In the course of our discussion, this seminary student disclosed to me that he knew of no scholar in the Nazarene Church who believed in the literal interpretation of the Holy Word of God. This seminary student personally felt that one person had written all four of the Gospels, and that person had credited them to known church leaders in order to give credibility to his work. This seminary student felt that the Book of Revelation was easy reading or a "funny book" (his words) and that the only thing that could be understood from the Book of Revelation was "If things get bad, they will get better." This seminary student did not believe that the re-establishment of Israel was prophetic, or was in an ordained plan by God.
I was at a Nazarene church that was being pastored by a graduate of Nazarene Bible College. In the course of discussion during a Wednesday night service, I asked the pastor if he believed Ephesians 4:11. The pastor said no, so I made no comment. At that time, other people in the congregation asked me what my point was. I stated that if the pastor did not believe the Holy Word of God, I had no foundation on which to make a point to the pastor. In later conversation with that pastor, he told me that he did not believe that God gave all five callings referenced in Ephesians 4:11, as he did not personally know individuals who were respectively called to all five of the areas of ministry referenced. I told the pastor that his faith was obviously limited to what he personally knew. You and I know that in accordance with Hebrews 11:1, that is no faith at all.
Hebrews 11:1 (NIV) Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.
I was in a service at a different Nazarene church and heard the pastor state in a message that because of what he had learned from reading the Jewish historian Josephus, he knew that the Holy Word of God in 1 Timothy 2:8-14 did not mean what it stated, and in fact really meant the exact opposite.
I had another pastor in the Nazarene Church advise me that one of the standing General Superintendents of the Nazarene Church was asked whether he believed that Job had ever existed as an actual man. The General Superintendent is reported to have said that he did not know whether Job had actually existed as a man, and it did not really matter to him, as it was only necessary to understand the principles that the Book of Job teaches.
A senior registered evangelist in the Nazarene Church has advised me that there is a professor at one of the Nazarene Universities that does not believe in the virgin birth of Jesus Christ, but legal complications inhibit the professors removal from the faculty.
Jesus Christ told the religious leaders of His day that they did not believe Him because they did not believe what Moses wrote. Moses wrote the first five books of the Bible. Like most of the religious leaders of today, the religious leaders of Jesus Christ's day did not believe the Holy Word of God.
John 5:46-47 (NIV) "If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?"
The Holy Word of God is the key to knowledge about God. To minimize the Holy Word of God is to take away the key to knowledge.
Luke 11:52 (NIV) "Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering."
The fourth Article of Faith, of the Constitution of the Nazarene Church, is recorded in their Manual. That Article of Faith relates to the Holy Scriptures, and states:
Luke 24:44-47 - 2 Timothy 3:15-17 - John 10:35 - 1 Peter 1:10-12 - 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 - 2 Peter 1:20-21
The devil, being most effective and most deadly when using his typical subtle method of operation, has elected to use the following "explanation" to introduce confusion into the understanding of the inspiration of the Holy Scriptures. The devil accepts the fact that the Holy Scriptures are inspired by the Holy Spirit of God, but then the devil puts forth this minimizing thought:
"One side of the spectrum is that God physically took a mans hand and wrote each word. The other side of the spectrum is that a godly man wrote his own thoughts. The inspiration of the Holy Scriptures lies somewhere in between those two poles." - Lucifer
In so "clarifying," the devil introduces enough doubt in the plenary inspiration of the Holy Scriptures to damn a lot of people who have had the Holy Scriptures negated in their minds when they read:
2 Peter 1:20-21 (NIV) Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
Acts 1:15-16 (NIV) In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) 16 and said, "Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through the mouth of David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus--
It was not necessary for the prophets to understand about what they were writing, and consequently many of them did not.
Daniel 8:27 (NIV) I, Daniel, was exhausted and lay ill for several days. Then I got up and went about the king's business. I was appalled by the vision; it was beyond understanding.
If the prophets did not understand the visions, how could they impose their own personal interpretations on the prophecies? It was only necessary that they write exactly as the Holy Spirit of God directed them.
Malachi 2:7 (NIV) "For the lips of a priest ought to preserve knowledge, and from his mouth men should seek instruction--because he is the messenger of the LORD Almighty.
Some of the prophecies were not given for their day. The prophecies were written for the edification of the church of the particular age effected by the prophesy.
Revelation 22:16 (NIV) "I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star."
1 Peter 1:10-12 (NIV) Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care, 11 trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow. 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.
More than 40 individual men, across a period of about 2,000 years, were inspired by the Holy Spirit of God to write God's Holy Word. These inspired writers wrote Holy Scriptures that give different views concerning God, God's Love, God's perfect order, and God's perfect plan to redeem sinful man. One view may be panoramic, one view may be of minute detail, somewhat like an architect's drawings. One view may be drawn from a distance, one view may be from close up. As all of the architect's drawings must mesh perfectly and compliment one another in order to accomplish the architect's plan, so must the Holy Scriptures mesh perfectly, and compliment each other in order to accomplish the Lord God's plan. The Holy Scriptures do mesh perfectly and compliment one another. It is certainly easy to believe that the writers of the Holy Word of God wrote exactly as the Holy Spirit of God inspired them. History has proven, and is continuing to additionally strengthen the proof that, all of the writers of the Holy Word of God, and all of the Holy Scriptures mesh perfectly. The Holy Word of God is truly magnificent.
We must interpret the Holy Scriptures by the Holy Scriptures, so let us determine what we can believe based on the Holy Word of God. As the Old Testament Scriptures used by the writers of the New Testament were so extensive, I elected to only reference them here but print them in the Appendix.
Matthew
By faith, I choose to believe that Matthew, inspired by the Holy Spirit of God, wrote the original Book of Matthew. If Matthew did not write the book credited to him, then the entire book is based on deception and fraud, or error. If Matthew did not write the original Book of Matthew, then it is not inspired by the Holy Spirit of God, as the Holy Spirit of God would never be involved in deception and fraud, and the Holy Spirit of God is incapable of error. If the Book of Matthew is not inspired by the Holy Spirit of God, then the Book of Matthew is worthless.
Matthew believed that the Holy Word of God should be understood literally, as he referenced the Holy Word of God in Matthew's writings. If Matthew did not believe that the Holy Word of God was to be understood literally, he would never have used it as conclusive proof of various events about which he wrote. If Matthew was mistaken about the literalness of the Holy Scriptures, then we can know that Matthew did not have good communication with the Holy Spirit of God. If Matthew did not have good communication with the Holy Spirit of God, then we can be sure that Matthew was mistaken about many other things that Matthew wrote. If Matthew's writings are full of misinformation, then they are worthless, as we can never tell where Matthew was correct and where Matthew was mistaken. If the Book of Matthew is not to be interpreted literally, then the Book of Matthew is worthless.
Matthew starts with the genealogy from Abraham to Jesus Christ. Matthew started his account based on the foundation that Jesus Christ was literally a descendant of Abraham. Matthew obviously believed that Abraham and all of Abraham's listed descendants were actual people:
Matthew 1:1-17
Matthew believed that the writings of Isaiah including the virgin birth were literal:
Matthew 1:22-23 (NIV) All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" --which means, "God with us."
Isaiah 7:14 (NIV) Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.
Matthews references to the Old Testament Scriptures:
Matthew 1:22-23 - Isaiah 7:14
Matthew 2:6 - Micah 5:2
Matthew 2:14-15 - Hosea 11:1

Matthew 27:35 - Psalms 22:18
Matthew 27:46 - Psalms 22:1
Mark
By faith, I choose to believe that Mark, inspired by the Holy Spirit of God, wrote the original Book of Mark. If Mark did not write the book credited to him, then the entire book is based on deception and fraud, or error. If Mark did not write the original Book of Mark, then it is not inspired by the Holy Spirit of God, as the Holy Spirit of God would never be involved in deception and fraud, and the Holy Spirit of God is incapable of error. If the Book of Mark is not inspired by the Holy Spirit of God, then the Book of Mark is worthless.
Mark believed that the Holy Word of God should be understood literally, as Mark referenced the Holy Word of God in Mark's writings. If Mark did not believe that the Holy Word of God was to be understood literally, Mark would never have used it as conclusive proof of various events about which Mark wrote. If Mark was mistaken about the literalness of the Holy Scriptures, then we can only believe that Mark did not have good communication with the Holy Spirit of God. If Mark's writings are full of misinformation, then they are worthless, as we can never tell where Mark was correct and where Mark was mistaken. Mark 11:9-10 - Psalms 118:25-26
Mark 15:28 - Isaiah 53:12
Mark 15:33-34 - Psalms 22:1
Luke
By faith, I choose to believe that Luke, inspired by the Holy Spirit of God, wrote the original Book of the Gospel of Luke, and the Book of the Acts of the Apostles. If Luke did not write the books credited to him, then all of the entire books are based on deception and fraud, or error. If Luke did not write the original Book of the Gospel of Luke, and the Book of the Acts of the Apostles, then those books are not inspired by the Holy Spirit of God, as the Holy Spirit of God would never be involved in deception and fraud, and the Holy Spirit of God is incapable of error. If the original Book of the Gospel of Luke, and the Book of the Acts of the Apostles are not inspired by the Holy Spirit of God, then the original Book of the Gospel of Luke, and the Book of the Acts of the Apostles are worthless.
Luke believed that the Holy Word of God should be understood literally, as Luke referenced the Holy Word of God in Luke's writings. If Luke did not believe that the Holy Word of God was to be understood literally, Luke would never have used it as conclusive proof of various events about which Luke wrote. If the original Book of the Gospel of Luke, and the Book of the Acts of the Apostles are not to be interpreted literally, then the original Book of the Gospel of Luke, and the Book of the Acts of the Apostles are worthless.
Luke references the genealogy from Jesus Christ to Adam. Luke started his Gospel account based on the foundation that Jesus Christ literally was a descendant of Adam. Luke obviously believed that Adam and all of Adam's listed descendants were actual people, and that the creation story was an actual, historical event:
Luke 3:23-38
Luke 2:4
Lukes references to the Old Testament Scriptures:
Luke 2:22-23 - Exodus 13:2 - Exodus 13:12
Luke 2:24 - Leviticus 12:8
Luke 3:4-6 - Isaiah 40:3-5
Luke 19:38 - Psalms 118:26
John
By faith, I choose to believe that John, inspired by the Holy Spirit of God, wrote the original Book of the Gospel of John, the Book of 1 John, the Book of II John, the Book of III John, and the Book of Revelation. If John did not write the books credited to him, then all of the entire books are based on deception and fraud, or error. If John did not write the original Books of the Gospel of John, I John, II John, III John, and Revelation, then those books are not inspired by the Holy Spirit of God, as the Holy Spirit of God would never be involved in deception and fraud, and the Holy Spirit of God is incapable of error. If the Books of the Gospel of John, I John, II John, III John, and Revelation are not inspired by the Holy Spirit of God, then the Books of the Gospel of John, I John, II John, III John, and Revelation are worthless.
John believed that the Holy Word of God should be understood literally, as John referenced the Holy Word of God in John's writings. If the Books of the Gospel of John, I John, II John, III John, and Revelation are not to be interpreted literally, then the Books of the Gospel of John, I John, II John, III John, and Revelation are worthless.
John believed in the actual people Cain and Abel, and the reality of the historical account referenced in Genesis:
1 John 3:12 (NIV) Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother's were righteous.
Johns references to the Old Testament Scriptures:
John 2:17 - Psalms 69:9
John 12:13 - Psalms 118:25-26
John 12:14-15 - Zechariah 9:9

Revelation 2:27 - Psalm 2:9
Revelation 14:14 - Daniel 7:13
Revelation 19:15 - Psalms 2:9
John the Baptist believed that the Holy Word of God should be understood literally, as John the Baptist referenced the Holy Word of God in his teaching. If John the Baptist did not believe that the Holy Word of God was to be understood literally, John the Baptist would never have used it as conclusive proof of various events about which John the Baptist spoke.
John 1:23 - Isaiah 40:3
The Apostle Peter
By faith, I choose to believe that Simon Peter, inspired by the Holy Spirit of God, wrote the original Books of I Peter, and II Peter. If Peter did not write the books credited to him, then all of the entire books are based on deception and fraud, or error. If Peter did not write the original Books of I Peter, and II Peter, then those books are not inspired by the Holy Spirit of God, as the Holy Spirit of God would never be involved in deception and fraud, and the Holy Spirit of God is incapable of error. If the original Books of I Peter, and II Peter are not inspired by the Holy Spirit of God, then the Books of I Peter, and II Peter are worthless.
Peter believed that the Holy Word of God should be understood literally, as Peter referenced the Holy Word of God in Peter's writings. If Peter did not believe that the Holy Word of God was to be understood literally, Peter would never have used it as conclusive proof of various events about which Peter wrote. If Peter was mistaken about the literalness of the Holy Scriptures, then we can only believe that Peter did not have good communication with the Holy Spirit of God. If Peter did not have good communication with the Holy Spirit of God, then we can be sure that Peter was mistaken about many other things that Peter wrote. If Peter's writings are full of misinformation, then they are worthless, as we can never tell where Peter was correct and where Peter was mistaken. If the Books of I Peter, and II Peter are not to be interpreted literally, then the Books of I Peter, and II Peter are worthless.
Peter believed that the Holy Scripture had to be fulfilled literally:
Acts 1:15-16 (NIV) In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) 16 and said, "Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through the mouth of David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus--
Acts 3:15-25 (NIV) You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. We are witnesses of this. 16 By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus' name and the faith that comes through him that has given this complete healing to him, as you can all see. 17 "Now, brothers, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did your leaders. 18 But this is how God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets, saying that his Christ would suffer. 19 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, 20 and that he may send the Christ, who has been appointed for you--even Jesus. 21 He must remain in heaven until the time comes for God to restore everything, as he promised long ago through his holy prophets. 22 For Moses said, 'The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you must listen to everything he tells you. 23 Anyone who does not listen to him will be completely cut off from among his people.' 24 "Indeed, all the prophets from Samuel on, as many as have spoken, have foretold these days. 25 And you are heirs of the prophets and of the covenant God made with your fathers. He said to Abraham, Through your offspring all peoples on earth will be blessed.
Acts 13:27-29 (NIV) The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath. 28 Though they found no proper ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed. 29 When they had carried out all that was written about him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb.
2 Peter 3:1-2 (NIV) Dear friends, this is now my second letter to you. I have written both of them as reminders to stimulate you to wholesome thinking. 2 I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets and the command given by our Lord and Savior through your apostles.
2 Peter 3:15-16 (NIV) Bear in mind that our Lord's patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. 16 He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.
Peter believed in the reality of the historical flood account, including the total destruction of all mankind, with the exception of Noah and his family.
1 Peter 3:18-20 (NIV) For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit, 19 through whom also he went and preached to the spirits in prison 20 who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water,
Peter also believed in the historical creation account.
2 Peter 3:5-6 (NIV) But they deliberately forget that long ago by God's word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water. 6 By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed.
Peter believed that the inspiration of the Holy Scriptures did not come from the emotions, logic, or the values of the writer:
2 Peter 1:19-21 (NIV) And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 20 Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
Peter believed in the reality of Angels, fallen Angels, Noah, the Flood, Lot; and that the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah was an actual historical event at a literal place.
2 Peter 2:4-8 (NIV) For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them into gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment; 5 if he did not spare the ancient world when he brought the flood on its ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others; 6 if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes, and made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; 7 and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the filthy lives of lawless men 8 (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)--

The Apostle Paul believed that the Holy Word of God should be understood literally, as Paul referenced the Holy Word of God in Paul's teachings and writings. If Paul did not believe that the Holy Word of God was to be understood literally, Paul would never have used it as conclusive proof of various events about which he spoke.
Paul believed in the historical account of the prophets:
Acts 17:2-3 (NIV) As his custom was, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures, 3 explaining and proving that the Christ had to suffer and rise from the dead. "This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Christ, " he said.
Acts 24:14 (NIV) However, I admit that I worship the God of our fathers as a follower of the Way, which they call a sect. I believe everything that agrees with the Law and that is written in the Prophets,
Acts 26:22-23 (NIV) But I have had God's help to this very day, and so I stand here and testify to small and great alike. I am saying nothing beyond what the prophets and Moses said would happen-- 23 that the Christ would suffer and, as the first to rise from the dead, would proclaim light to his own people and to the Gentiles."
Acts 28:23-24 (NIV) They arranged to meet Paul on a certain day, and came in even larger numbers to the place where he was staying. From morning till evening he explained and declared to them the kingdom of God and tried to convince them about Jesus from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets.
Romans 1:1-2 (NIV) Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God-- 2 the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures
Romans 3:1-2 (NIV) What advantage, then, is there in being a Jew, or what value is there in circumcision? 2 Much in every way! First of all, they have been entrusted with the very words of God.
Romans 15:4 (NIV) For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
Romans 16:25-27 (NIV) Now to him who is able to establish you by my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery hidden for long ages past, 26 but now revealed and made known through the prophetic writings by the command of the eternal God, so that all nations might believe and obey him-- 27 to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen.
1 Corinthians 15:3-5 (NIV) For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance : that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve.
2 Timothy 3:14-16 (NIV) But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15 and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,
Paul believed that what Paul was teaching came directly from the Holy Spirit of God:
Galatians 1:11-12 (NIV) I want you to know, brothers, that the gospel I preached is not something that man made up. 12 I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ.
Galatians 3:8 (NIV) The Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: "All nations will be blessed through you."
Galatians 3:22 (NIV) But the Scripture declares that the whole world is a prisoner of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe.
Paul believed that the Holy Scriptures were to be interpreted literally giving credence to every "jot and tittle", and that the time stated was literal and accurate.
Galatians 3:16-17 (NIV) The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. The Scripture does not say "and to seeds," meaning many people, but "and to your seed," meaning one person, who is Christ. 17 What I mean is this: The law, introduced 430 years later, does not set aside the covenant previously established by God and thus do away with the promise.
Paul believed that the Scriptural reference to Abraham, Isaac, Ishmael, and the Covenant was literal and accurate.
Galatians 4:22-23 (NIV) For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman and the other by the free woman. 23 His son by the slave woman was born in the ordinary way; but his son by the free woman was born as the result of a promise.
Paul believed that what Paul was relating to the Thessalonians, was the actual Holy Word of God.
1 Thessalonians 2:13 (NIV) And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is at work in you who believe.
Paul paralleled the Holy Word of God, and sound doctrine; while contrasting the Holy Word of God to myths. When YOU preach the Holy Word of God, YOU are preaching sound doctrine.
2 Timothy 4:2-4 (NIV) Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage--with great patience and careful instruction. 3 For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.
Acts 10:43 (NIV) All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name."

The writer to the Hebrews believed that the Holy Word of God should be understood literally, as he referenced the Holy Word of God in his teachings and writings. If the writer to the Hebrews did not believe that the Holy Word of God was to be understood literally, he would never have used it as conclusive proof of various events about which he spoke.
Hebrews 1:1 (NIV) In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways,
The writer to the Hebrews believed that Melchizedek, Abraham, Levi, and the situation that occurred immediately following Abraham's battle referenced in Genesis was a reality:
Hebrews 7:1-10 (NIV) This Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of God Most High. He met Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings and blessed him, 2 and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. First, his name means "king of righteousness"; then also, "king of Salem" means "king of peace." 3 Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, like the Son of God he remains a priest forever. 4 Just think how great he was: Even the patriarch Abraham gave him a tenth of the plunder! 5 Now the law requires the descendants of Levi who become priests to collect a tenth from the people--that is, their brothers--even though their brothers are descended from Abraham. 6 This man, however, did not trace his descent from Levi, yet he collected a tenth from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises. 7 And without doubt the lesser person is blessed by the greater. 8 In the one case, the tenth is collected by men who die; but in the other case, by him who is declared to be living. 9 One might even say that Levi, who collects the tenth, paid the tenth through Abraham, 10 because when Melchizedek met Abraham, Levi was still in the body of his ancestor.
The writer to the Hebrews believed the creation account found in Genesis, the flood account, and that the entire Holy Word of God was a historical record, because he referenced them in Hebrews chapter 11 -
The writer to the Hebrews believed that Esau was an actual, historical person:
Hebrews 12:16-17 (NIV) See that no one is sexually immoral, or is godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his inheritance rights as the oldest son. 17 Afterward, as you know, when he wanted to inherit this blessing, he was rejected. He could bring about no change of mind, though he sought the blessing with tears.
The writer to the Hebrews believed that Abel was an actual, historical person:
Hebrews 12:24 (NIV) to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.
The writer to the Hebrews believed that the leaders had spoken the Holy Word of God:
Hebrews 13:7 (NIV) Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.
The writer to the Hebrews references to the Old Testament Scriptures:
Hebrews 1:5-13 - Psalms 2:7 - 2 Samuel 7:14 - Deuteronomy 32:43 - Psalms 104:4 - Psalms 45:6-7 - Psalms 102:25-27 - Psalms 110:1

Paul & Barnabus believed the Holy Word of God literally:
Acts 13:47 - Isaiah 49:6
Stephen believed the Holy Word of God literally, as Stephen's dissertation was a historical recounting of a segment of Genesis; and Stephen was a man that the Holy Scriptures stated was full of Gods grace and power:
Acts 6:8-10 (NIV) Now Stephen, a man full of God's grace and power, did great wonders and miraculous signs among the people. 9 Opposition arose, however, from members of the Synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called)--Jews of Cyrene and Alexandria as well as the provinces of Cilicia and Asia. These men began to argue with Stephen, 10 but they could not stand up against his wisdom or the Spirit by whom he spoke.
Acts 6:15 (NIV) All who were sitting in the Sanhedrin looked intently at Stephen, and they saw that his face was like the face of an angel.
Stephen's references to the Old Testament Scriptures:
Acts 7:2-7 - Genesis 12:1 - Genesis 15:13-14
Acts 7:1-60 - Exodus 2:14 - Exodus 3:6 - Exodus 3:5 - Exodus 3:7-8 - Exodus 3:10 - Deuteronomy 18:15 - Exodus 32:1 - Amos 5:25-27 - Isaiah 66:1-2
Peter, John, and the people believed the creation story:
Acts 4:24
Peter, John, and the people believed the Holy Word of God literally:
Acts 4:25-26 - Psalms 2:1-2
The crowd of Jewish people around Jesus believed the Holy Word of God literally:
John 6:31 - Exodus 16:4 - Psalms 78:24
Philip believed the Holy Word of God literally:
John 1:45 (NIV) Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wroteJesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."
Philip and the Eunuch believed the Holy Word of God literally:
Acts 8:26-35 - Isaiah 53:7-8
James believed the Holy Word of God literally:
James 2:25 (NIV) In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction?
Acts 15:15-18 - Amos 9:11-12
James 2:8 - Leviticus 19:18
James 2:11 - Exodus 20:14 - Deuteronomy 5:18 - Exodus 20:13 - Deuteronomy 5:17
James 2:23 - Genesis 15:6
James 4:5-6 - Proverbs 3:3-4
The Bereans believed the Holy Word of God literally:
Acts 17:11 (NIV) Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.
Sergius Paulus was the proconsul and an intelligent man, and he believed that what Barnabus and Saul were teaching was the Holy Word of God:
Acts 13:7
Acts 13:12
Apollos believed the Holy Word of God literally:
Acts 18:27-28 (NIV) When Apollos wanted to go to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples there to welcome him. On arriving, he was a great help to those who by grace had believed. 28 For he vigorously refuted the Jews in public debate, proving from the Scriptures that Jesus was the Christ.
Paul stated that King Agrippa believed the Holy Word of God literally:
Acts 26:27 (NIV) King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know you do."
The devil believed the Holy Word of God should be understood literally, as the devil referenced the Holy Word of God in the temptation of Jesus Christ.
Matthew 4:6 (NIV) "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down. For it is written: "'He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'"
Luke 4:10-11(NIV) For it is written: "'He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; 11 they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone."
Psalms 91:11-12 (NIV) For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; 12 they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
The chief priests and Herod believed the Holy Word of God literally:
Matthew 2:3-6 (NIV) When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born. 5 "In Bethlehem in Judea," they replied, "for this is what the prophet has written: 6 "'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.'"
Micah 5:2 (NIV) "But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times."
King Herod believed the Holy Word of God, and the Magis understanding of the Holy Word of God enough to kill all the boy babies in Bethlehem:
Matthew 2:16 (NIV) When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi.
Zechariah believed the Holy Word of God literally:
Luke 1:6-7 (NIV) Both of them were upright in the sight of God, observing all the Lord's commandments and regulations blamelessly. 7 But they had no children, because Elizabeth was barren; and they were both well along in years.
Luke 1: 69-70 (NIV) He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David 70 (as he said through his holy prophets of long ago),
Jude believed the Holy Word of God literally, as Jude referenced the Exodus of the Children Israel, the fall of Satan, Sodom and Gomorrah, Cain, Balaam, Korah, and their respective historical accounts:
Jude 1:5-7 (NIV) Though you already know all this, I want to remind you that the Lord delivered his people out of Egypt, but later destroyed those who did not believe. 6 And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their own home--these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day. 7 In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.
Jude 1:11 (NIV) Woe to them! They have taken the way of Cain; they have rushed for profit into Balaam's error; they have been destroyed in Korah's rebellion.
Jude believed that Enoch was a historical person, and that the Genesis account of the descendants of Adam was accurate:
Jude 1:14-15 (NIV) Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men: "See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones 15 to judge everyone, and to convict all the ungodly of all the ungodly acts they have done in the ungodly way, and of all the harsh words ungodly sinners have spoken against him."
There were eight (or debatably nine) writers of the New Testament. They included: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Paul, the writer to the Hebrews (probably Paul), James, Peter, and Jude.
Every single one of them believed the Old Testament, Moses, and the Prophets literally. All of the writers of the New Testament looked to the Old Testament not as allegorical, but as historical, and they made "jot and tittle" judgments on the meaning of the Holy Scriptures. One would certainly believe that we should follow their example.
Jesus Christ, and The New Testament writers referenced the following books as literal, and as substantive proof of their own teaching and writings:
Genesis - Exodus - Leviticus - Numbers - Deuteronomy - Judges - 2 Samuel - 1 Kings - Job - Psalms - Proverbs - Ecclesiastes - Isaiah - Jeremiah - Ezekiel - Daniel - Hosea - Joel - Amos - Jonah - Micah - Habakkuk - Haggai - Zechariah - Malachi
Jesus Christ, and The New Testament writers accepted as literal, the creation account, the history of Adam and his descendants all the way to Jesus Christ; including: Cain, Abel, Enoch, Noah, Job, Jonah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Sara, Joseph, Moses, Rahab, Gideon, Barak, Sampson, Jepthah, David, Samuel and the prophets.
Most importantly, and truly the only singular significant fact is that Jesus Christ, the Lord God, Adonai Elohim who was in the beginning, created everything, and without Him, nothing was created - knows that the Holy Word of God is literal, actual, and historical.
Jesus Christ was in the beginning, and knows perfectly all of mankinds history. Jesus Christ knows that the Holy Word of God is a historical account. Who is better qualified to testify as to the authenticity of the Holy Word of God, than the very Creator who was with God, and was God in the beginning?
Jesus Christ knows that the Holy Word of God is to be understood and interpreted historically and literally; as Jesus Christ quoted the Holy Word of God, and endorsed the Holy Word of God, as well as the people referenced in the Holy Word of God.
(I hesitate to say this, but I must qualify for the simple minded and the spiritually blind that when Jesus Christ illuminated a truth through a parable, then the parable that Jesus Christ gave was simply an illustration.)
If Jesus Christ is who Jesus Christ says He is, then the Holy Word of God is what Jesus Christ knows that the Holy Word of God is
If the Holy Word of God is not what Jesus Christ thinks the Holy Word of God is, then Jesus Christ is not who Jesus Christ said He is.
If the Holy Word of God is not literal truth, then Jesus Christ by His actions and words is a fraud or never even existed, and certainly did not actually, literally, and historically rise from the dead.
John 1:1-3 (NIV) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
Genesis 2:4-7 (NIV) This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created. When the LORD God made the earth and the heavens-- 5 and no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth and no plant of the field had yet sprung up, for the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no man to work the ground, 6 but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground-- 7 the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
Jesus Christ knows that the Holy Word of God is to be understood literally:
Matthew 5:17-19 (NIV) "Do not think that I have come to destroy the Law and the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven."
Matthew 26:24a (NIV) "The son of Man will go just as it is written about him."
Matthew 26:53-54 (NIV) "Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?"
Matthew 26:56 (NIV) "But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.
Mark 2:1-2 (NIV) A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. 2 So many gathered that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them.
Mark 14:49 (NIV) "Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled."
Jesus Christ certainly knows that the account of Elijah, Elisha, and Naaman the Syrian is accurate and real:
Luke 4:25-27 (NIV) "I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah's time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land. Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon. And there were many in Israel with leprosy in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed--only Naaman the Syrian."
Luke 8:20-21 (NIV) Someone told him "Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you." 21 He replied, "My mother and brothers are those who hear Gods word and put it into practice."
Luke 18:31 (NIV) Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, "We are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled."
Luke 21:20-22 (NIV) "When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near. Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city. For this is the time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written."
Luke 22:37 (NIV) "It is written: And he was numbered with the transgressors; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment."
Luke 24:25-27 (NIV) He said to them, "How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?" And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.
Luke 24:32 (NIV) They asked each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?"
Luke 24:44-47 (NIV) He said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms." Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, "This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem."
John 2:18-22 (NIV) Then the Jews demanded of Him, "What miraculous sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?" 19 Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days." 20 The Jews replied, "It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?" 21 But the temple he had spoken of was His body. 22 After He was raised from the dead, His disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the Scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.
John 5:39-40 (NIV) "You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life."
John 5:46-47 (NIV) "If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. 47 But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?"
Jesus Christ certainly knows that the Desert Wandering account is actual:
John 6:49 (NIV) "Your forefathers ate the manna in the desert, yet they died."
John 10:35 (NIV) "If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came-and the Scripture cannot be broken-"
John 19:28 (NIV) Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, "I am thirsty."
John 20:9 (NIV) (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)
Jesus Christ knows that if the people did not believe Moses and the Prophets, they would not believe Him either; and Jesus Christ relates that fact in the account in Luke. The writing of Moses and the Prophets is the Holy Word of God:
Luke 16:27-31 (NIV) "He answered, Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my fathers house, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment. "Abraham replied, they have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them. "No, father Abraham, he said, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent. "He said to him, If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead."

Jesus Christ referenced the creation story as actual.
Matthew 19:3-6 (NIV) Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?" "Haven't you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,' and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'? So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."
Mark 13:18-19 (NIV) "Pray that this will not take place in winter, because those will be days of distress unequaled from the beginning, when God created the world, until now-and never to be equaled again."
Jesus Christ referenced the flood account as historical:
Matthew 24:37-39 "As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man."
Jesus Christ referenced Abel as an actual person.
Matthew 23:35 (NIV) "And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar."
While we have no record of Jesus Christ referencing Job as literal, we do have record of Ezekiel, James, and Paul referencing Job as actual:
Ezekiel 14:14 (NIV) even if these three men--Noah, Daniel and Job--were in it, they could save only themselves by their righteousness, declares the Sovereign LORD.
Ezekiel 14:20 (NIV) as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, even if Noah, Daniel and Job were in it, they could save neither son nor daughter. They would save only themselves by their righteousness.
James 5:11 (NIV) As you know, we consider blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job's perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.
Romans 11:33-36 (NIV) Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! 34 "Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?" 35 "Who has ever given to God, that God should repay him?" 36 For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen.
Job 41:11 (NIV) Who has a claim against me that I must pay? Everything under heaven belongs to me.
1 Corinthians 3:19 (NIV) For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God's sight. As it is written: "He catches the wise in their craftiness"
Job 5:13 (NIV) He catches the wise in their craftiness, and the schemes of the wily are swept away.
Jesus Christ referenced the Creation account, Noah, and Jonah. It requires faith to believe the creation story that Jesus Christ referenced. It requires faith to believe the Genesis account of the flood that destroyed all of mankind except Noah and his family. It requires faith to believe that a great fish swallowed a man whole, the man stayed alive for three days in the fish’s stomach, and then the fish vomited the man out on the beach at God’s direction. If YOU can by faith, accept those accounts that Jesus Christ specifically referenced as literal and actual, doesnt it require much less faith to accept that Job was a literal and actual person?
Matthew 12:39-40 (NIV) He answered, "A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth."
Matthew 24:37-39 (NIV) "As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man."

Jesus Christ confirmed the twelfth chapter of Revelation before it was written - Luke 10:18
The Holy Word of God is Perfectly Consistent.
Humanity has been given five senses to procure information for analysis and review by the mind. The only other possible avenue for gaining information is a spirit. The Holy Word of God tastes, smells, looks, sounds, and feels the same throughout the Old and the New Testament. In our humanity, we sometimes read something in the Holy Word of God, whereby our lack of understanding makes it appear that there is contradiction. Know that it is a lack of our understanding. If a Scripture is not in compliance with the total of all other Scriptures, it is because of misinterpretation on the part of you or the translator. An example of a translation problem is found in James 1:14:
James 1:14-15 (NIV) but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire ("e p u q u m t a V "), he is dragged away and enticed. 15 Then after desire ("e p u q u m t a ") has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.
We know that Jesus Christ was tempted in every way (Hebrews 4:15), and had no evil desire in Him, so we know that there is a translation problem. I referred to the NIV Interlinear English - Greek New Testament. In the original Greek text, the word "e p u q u m t a V " has been translated "evil desire" in James 1:14. In James 1:15, the same Greek word in the singular form "e p u q u m t a " is simply translated "desire." The exact same word in the Greek text has been translated two different ways. The translator has placed the word evil in the NIV text of James 1:14, and that word absolutely does not exist in the original Greek text of James 1:14.
The translators motive in this case was obviously to shape the Holy Word of God to comply with his "Calvinistic" theology that states that man cannot be rid of the carnal, evil, sinful nature in this lifetime. Jesus Christ was free of this carnal sin nature, and YOU can be.
Every translation is imperfect as these are the work of man. The original Hebrew and Greek writings are perfect, as these are the Holy Words of God.
When Jesus Christ said "A farmer went out to sow seed." Jesus Christ gave that illustration as a parable. When Jesus Christ said:
Luke 16:19-21 (NIV) "There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores."
Jesus Christ did not lie, in that there actually and literally was a beggar named Lazarus, and there actually and literally was a rich man. Out of courtesy to the fact that the rich man is in Hell, the rich man remains unnamed. (It is also possible that when you go to Hell, you no longer have a name.)
When the Holy Word of God says:
Job 1:1-3 (NIV) In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil. 2 He had seven sons and three daughters, 3 and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys, and had a large number of servants. He was the greatest man among all the people of the East.
I believe that the greatest man among all the people of the east, was a man named Job, who lived in Uz. The fact that I cannot find Uz on a Rand McNally map, nor a headstone for Job in the Greenlawn Memorial Cemetery does not weaken my faith. Moses is not there either. I am sure that Job existed literally in an actual place named Uz.
The Holy Word of God does use symbolism in specific instances, because the Holy Word of God says that the Holy Word of God uses symbolism. In these cases you can know that the Holy Word of God is speaking figuratively because the Holy Word of God literally tells you that the Holy Word of God is speaking figuratively.
Revelation 1:20 - Revelation 4:5 - Revelation 1:3-4 - Revelation 12:3-12:9 - Revelation 17:3 - Revelation 17:9 - Revelation 17:12 - Revelation 17:15 - Revelation 17:18 - Revelation 20:2 - Revelation 12 - Daniel 7:15-24
I must say that it exasperates and frustrates me that spiritually blind people cannot differentiate between actual and figurative. Many of those who do not believe in the literal interpretation of the Holy Word of God use Job or Genesis as an example of what they might not believe. It is probable that in reality the unbelievers are attempting to soften or negate some of the Holy Word of God, in order to minimize the entire Holy Word of God, and particularly that specific portion that references something that the unbelievers do not like or agree with that points up to sin in the unbelievers own life that the unbelievers do not wish to address.
Hebrews 11:3 (NIV) By faith we understand that the universe was formed by Gods command.

Matthew
Matthew starts with the genealogy from Abraham to Jesus Christ. Matthew started his account based on the foundation that Jesus Christ literally came from the descendancy of Abraham. Matthew obviously believed that Abraham and all of Abraham's listed descendants were actual people:
Matthew 1:1-17 (NIV) A record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham: 2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, 3 Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar, Perez the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram, 4 Ram the father of Amminadab, Amminadab the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon, 5 Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab, Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth, Obed the father of Jesse, 6 and Jesse the father of King David. David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah's wife, 7 Solomon the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, Abijah the father of Asa, 8 Asa the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Jehoram, Jehoram the father of Uzziah, 9 Uzziah the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, 10 Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amon, Amon the father of Josiah, 11 and Josiah the father of Jeconiah and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon. 12 After the exile to Babylon: Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, 13 Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, Abiud the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor, 14 Azor the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Akim, Akim the father of Eliud, 15 Eliud the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob, 16 and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. 17 Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ.
Matthew believed that the writings of Isaiah including the virgin birth were literal.
Matthew 2:6 (NIV) "'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.'"
Micah 5:2 (NIV) "But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times."
Matthew 2:14-15 (NIV) So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: "Out of Egypt I called my son."
Hosea 11:1 (NIV) "When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.
Matthew 2:17-18 (NIV) Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: 18 "A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more."
Jeremiah 31:15 (NIV) This is what the LORD says: "A voice is heard in Ramah, mourning and great weeping, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because her children are no more."
Matthew 2:22-23 (NIV) But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee, 23 and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets: "He will be called a Nazarene."
Judges 13:7 (NIV) But he said to me, 'You will conceive and give birth to a son. Now then, drink no wine or other fermented drink and do not eat anything unclean, because the boy will be a Nazirite of God from birth until the day of his death.'"
Matthew 3:3 (NIV) This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: "A voice of one calling in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.'"
Isaiah 40:3 (NIV) A voice of one calling: "In the desert prepare the way for the LORD ; make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God.
Matthew 4:13-16 (NIV) Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali-- 14 to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah: 15 "Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way to the sea, along the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles-- 16 the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned."
Isaiah 9:1-2 (NIV) Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the Gentiles, by the way of the sea, along the Jordan-- 2 The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.
Matthew 8:17 (NIV) This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: "He took up our infirmities and carried our diseases."
Isaiah 53:4 (NIV) Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted.
Matthew 12:17-21 (NIV) This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: 18 "Here is my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love, in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations. 19 He will not quarrel or cry out; no one will hear his voice in the streets. 20 A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out, till he leads justice to victory. 21 In his name the nations will put their hope."
Isaiah 42:1-4 (NIV) "Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him and he will bring justice to the nations. 2 He will not shout or cry out, or raise his voice in the streets. 3 A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out. In faithfulness he will bring forth justice; 4 he will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice on earth. In his law the islands will put their hope."
Matthew 13:34-35 (NIV) Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable. 35 So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet: "I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world."
Psalms 78:2 (NIV) I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter hidden things, things from of old-
Matthew 21:1-5 (NIV) As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, "Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, tell him that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away." 4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: 5 "Say to the Daughter of Zion, 'See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.'"
Zechariah 9:9 (NIV) Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
Matthew 21:9 (NIV) The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, "Hosanna to the Son of David!" "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Hosanna in the highest!"
Psalms 118:26 (NIV) Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD. From the house of the LORD we bless you.
Matthew 27:9-10 (NIV) Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: "They took the thirty silver coins, the price set on him by the people of Israel, 10 and they used them to buy the potter's field, as the Lord commanded me."
Zechariah 11:12-13 (NIV) I told them, "If you think it best, give me my pay; but if not, keep it." So they paid me thirty pieces of silver. 13 And the LORD said to me, "Throw it to the potter"--the handsome price at which they priced me! So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the LORD to the potter.
Jeremiah 32:6-9 (NIV) Jeremiah said, "The word of the LORD came to me: 7 Hanamel son of Shallum your uncle is going to come to you and say, 'Buy my field at Anathoth, because as nearest relative it is your right and duty to buy it.' 8 "Then, just as the LORD had said, my cousin Hanamel came to me in the courtyard of the guard and said, 'Buy my field at Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin. Since it is your right to redeem it and possess it, buy it for yourself.' "I knew that this was the word of the LORD; 9 so I bought the field at Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel and weighed out for him seventeen shekels of silver.
Matthew 27:35 (NIV) When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots.
Psalms 22:18 (NIV) They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing.
Matthew 27:46 (NIV) About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?"--which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
Psalms 22:1 (NIV) For the director of music. To the tune of "The Doe of the Morning." A psalm of David. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from the words of my groaning?
Mark
Mark 1:1-3 (NIV) The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God. 2 It is written in Isaiah the prophet: "I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way"-- 3 "a voice of one calling in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.'"
Malachi 3:1 (NIV) "See, I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come," says the LORD Almighty.

Luke 2:22-23 (NIV) When the time of their purification according to the Law of Moses had been completed, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, "Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord"),
Exodus 13:2 (NIV) "Consecrate to me every firstborn male. The first offspring of every womb among the Israelites belongs to me, whether man or animal."
Exodus 13:12 (NIV) you are to give over to the LORD the first offspring of every womb. All the firstborn males of your livestock belong to the LORD.
Luke 2:24 (NIV) and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: "a pair of doves or two young pigeons."
Leviticus 12:8 (NIV) "If she cannot afford a lamb, she is to bring two doves or two young pigeons, one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering. In this way the priest will make atonement for her, and she will be clean."
Luke starts with the genealogy from Jesus Christ to Adam. Luke started his account based on the foundation that Jesus Christ literally came from the descendancy of Adam. Luke obviously believed that Adam and all of his listed descendants were actual people, and that the creation story was an actual event:
Luke 3:23-38 (NIV) Now Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry. He was the son, so it was thought, of Joseph, the son of Heli, 24 the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melki, the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph, 25 the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Esli, the son of Naggai, 26 the son of Maath, the son of Mattathias, the son of Semein, the son of Josech, the son of Joda, 27 the son of Joanan, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, the son of Neri, 28 the son of Melki, the son of Addi, the son of Cosam, the son of Elmadam, the son of Er, 29 the son of Joshua, the son of Eliezer, the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, 30 the son of Simeon, the son of Judah, the son of Joseph, the son of Jonam, the son of Eliakim, 31 the son of Melea, the son of Menna, the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan, the son of David, 32 the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Salmon, the son of Nahshon, 33 the son of Amminadab, the son of Ram, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah, 34 the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor, 35 the son of Serug, the son of Reu, the son of Peleg, the son of Eber, the son of Shelah, 36 the son of Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech, 37 the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalalel, the son of Kenan, 38 the son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.
Luke 3:4-6 (NIV) As is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: "A voice of one calling in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. 5 Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth. 6 And all mankind will see God's salvation.'"
Isaiah 40:3-5 (NIV) A voice of one calling: "In the desert prepare the way for the LORD ; make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God. 4 Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. 5 And the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all mankind together will see it. For the mouth of the LORD has spoken."
Luke 19:38 (NIV) "Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!"
Psalms 118:26 (NIV) Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. From the house of the Lord we bless you.
John
John 2:17 (NIV) His disciples remembered that it is written: "Zeal for your house will consume me."
Psalms 69:9 (NIV) for zeal for your house consumes me, and the insults of those who insult you fall on me.
John 12:13 (NIV) They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, "Hosanna! " "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Blessed is the King of Israel!"
Psalms 118:25-26 (NIV) O LORD, save us; O LORD, grant us success. 26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD. From the house of the LORD we bless you.
John 12:14-15 (NIV) Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it, as it is written, 15 "Do not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey's colt."
Zechariah 9:9 (NIV) Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
John 12:38 (NIV) This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: "Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?"
Isaiah 53:1 (NIV) Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
John 12:39-41 (NIV) For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere: 40 "He has blinded their eyes and deadened their hearts, so they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn--and I would heal them." 41 Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus' glory and spoke about him.

I will return to you at the appointed time next year and Sarah will have a son."
Romans 9:10-12 (NIV) Not only that, but Rebekah's children had one and the same father, our father Isaac. 11 Yet, before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad--in order that God's purpose in election might stand: 12 not by works but by him who calls--she was told, "The older will serve the younger."

Romans 10:12-13 (NIV) For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile--the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."
Joel 2:32 (NIV) And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved; for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance, as the LORD has said, among the survivors whom the LORD calls.
Romans 10:15 (NIV) And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!"
Isaiah 52:7 (NIV) How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, "Your God reigns!"
Romans 10:16 (NIV) But not all the Israelites accepted the good news. For Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed our message?"
Isaiah 53:1 (NIV) Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
Romans 10:18 (NIV) But I ask: Did they not hear? Of course they did: "Their voice has gone out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world."
Psalms 19:4 (NIV) Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun,
Romans 10:19 (NIV) Again I ask: Did Israel not understand? First, Moses says, "I will make you envious by those who are not a nation; I will make you angry by a nation that has no understanding."
Deuteronomy 32:21 (NIV) They made me jealous by what is no god and angered me with their worthless idols. I will make them envious by those who are not a people; I will make them angry by a nation that has no understanding.
Romans 10:20 (NIV) And Isaiah boldly says, "I was found by those who did not seek me; I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me."
Isaiah 65:1 (NIV) "I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me; I was found by those who did not seek me. To a nation that did not call on my name, I said, 'Here am I, here am I.'
Romans 10:21 (NIV) But concerning Israel he says, "All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and obstinate people."
Isaiah 65:2 (NIV) All day long I have held out my hands to an obstinate people, who walk in ways not good, pursuing their own imaginations--
Romans 11:2-3 (NIV) God did not reject his people, whom he foreknew. Don't you know what the Scripture says in the passage about Elijah--how he appealed to God against Israel: 3 "Lord, they have killed your prophets and torn down your altars; I am the only one left, and they are trying to kill me"?
1 Kings 19:10-14 (NIV) He replied, "I have been very zealous for the LORD God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, broken down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too." 11 The LORD said, "Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by." Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. 13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?" 14 He replied, "I have been very zealous for the LORD God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, broken down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too."
Romans 11:4 (NIV) And what was God's answer to him? "I have reserved for myself seven thousand who have not bowed the knee to Baal."
1 Kings 19:18 (NIV) Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israel--all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and all whose mouths have not kissed him."
Romans 11:8 (NIV) as it is written: "God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes so that they could not see and ears so that they could not hear, to this very day."
Deuteronomy 29:4 (NIV) But to this day the LORD has not given you a mind that understands or eyes that see or ears that hear.
Isaiah 29:10 (NIV) The LORD has brought over you a deep sleep: He has sealed your eyes (the prophets); he has covered your heads (the seers).
Romans 11:9-10 (NIV) And David says: "May their table become a snare and a trap, a stumbling block and a retribution for them. 10 May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever."
Psalms 69:22-23 (NIV) May the table set before them become a snare; may it become retribution and a trap. 23 May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever.
Romans 11:26-27 (NIV) And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: "The deliverer will come from Zion; he will turn godlessness away from Jacob. 27 And this is my covenant with them when I take away their sins."
Isaiah 59:20-21 (NIV) "The Redeemer will come to Zion, to those in Jacob who repent of their sins," declares the LORD. 21 "As for me, this is my covenant with them," says the LORD. "My Spirit, who is on you, and my words that I have put in your mouth will not depart from your mouth, or from the mouths of your children, or from the mouths of their descendants from this time on and forever," says the LORD.
Isaiah 27:9 (NIV) By this, then, will Jacob's guilt be atoned for, and this will be the full fruitage of the removal of his sin: When he makes all the altar stones to be like chalk stones crushed to pieces, no Asherah poles or incense altars will be left standing.
Amen.
Isaiah 40:13 (NIV) Who has understood the mind of the LORD, or instructed him as his counselor?
Job 41:11 (NIV) Who has a claim against me that I must pay? Everything under heaven belongs to me.
Romans 12:19 (NIV) Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord.

Proverbs 25:21-22 (NIV) If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; if he is thirsty, give him water to drink. 22 In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head, and the LORD will reward you.
Romans 13:8-9 (NIV) Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law. 9 The commandments, "Do not commit adultery," "Do not murder," "Do not steal," "Do not covet," and whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in this one rule: "Love your neighbor as yourself."
Exodus 20:13-15 (NIV) "You shall not murder. 14 "You shall not commit adultery. 15 "You shall not steal.

Romans 15:3 (NIV) For even Christ did not please himself but, as it is written: "The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me."
Psalms 69:9 (NIV) for zeal for your house consumes me, and the insults of those who insult you fall on me.
Romans 15:8-9 (NIV) For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the Jews on behalf of God's truth, to confirm the promises made to the patriarchs 9 so that the Gentiles may glorify God for his mercy, as it is written: "Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles; I will sing hymns to your name."
2 Samuel 22:50 (NIV) Therefore I will praise you, O LORD, among the nations; I will sing praises to your name.

Psalms 117:1 (NIV) Praise the LORD, all you nations; extol him, all you peoples.
Romans 15:12 (NIV) And again, Isaiah says, "The Root of Jesse will spring up, one who will arise to rule over the nations; the Gentiles will hope in him."
Isaiah 11:10 (NIV) In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations will rally to him, and his place of rest will be glorious.
Romans 15:21 (NIV) Rather, as it is written: "Those who were not told about him will see, and those who have not heard will understand."
Isaiah 52:15 (NIV) so will he sprinkle many nations, and kings will shut their mouths because of him. For what they were not told, they will see, and what they have not heard, they will understand.
1 Corinthians 1:19 (NIV) For it is written: "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate."
Isaiah 29:14 (NIV) Therefore once more I will astound these people with wonder upon wonder; the wisdom of the wise will perish, the intelligence of the intelligent will vanish."
1 Corinthians 1:31 (NIV) Therefore, as it is written: "Let him who boasts boast in the Lord."
Jeremiah 9:24 (NIV) but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight," declares the LORD.
1 Corinthians 2:9 (NIV) However, as it is written: "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him"--
Isaiah 64:4 (NIV) Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who acts on behalf of those who wait for him.
1 Corinthians 2:15-16 (NIV) The spiritual man makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to any man's judgment: 16 "For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him?" But we have the mind of Christ.
Isaiah 40:13 (NIV) Who has understood the mind of the LORD, or instructed him as his counselor?
1 Corinthians 3:19 (NIV) For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God's sight. As it is written: "He catches the wise in their craftiness";
Job 5:13 (NIV) He catches the wise in their craftiness, and the schemes of the wily are swept away.
1 Corinthians 3:20 (NIV) and again, "The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile."

Deuteronomy 22:21 (NIV) she shall be brought to the door of her father's house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. She has done a disgraceful thing in Israel by being promiscuous while still in her father's house. You must purge the evil from among you.
Deuteronomy 22:24 (NIV) you shall take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to death--the girl because she was in a town and did not scream for help, and the man because he violated another man's wife. You must purge the evil from among you.

1 Corinthians 9:9 (NIV) For it is written in the Law of Moses: "Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain." Is it about oxen that God is concerned?

Isaiah 28:11-12 (NIV) Very well then, with foreign lips and strange tongues God will speak to this people, 12 to whom he said, "This is the resting place, let the weary rest"; and, "This is the place of repose"-- but they would not listen.
Deuteronomy 28:49 (NIV) The LORD will bring a nation against you from far away, from the ends of the earth, like an eagle swooping down, a nation whose language you will not understand,
1 Corinthians 15:27 (NIV) For he "has put everything under his feet." Now when it says that "everything" has been put under him, it is clear that this does not include God himself, who put everything under Christ.
Psalms 8:6 (NIV) You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet:
1 Corinthians 15:32 (NIV) If I fought wild beasts in Ephesus for merely human reasons, what have I gained? If the dead are not raised, "Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die."
Isaiah 22:13 (NIV) But see, there is joy and revelry, slaughtering of cattle and killing of sheep, eating of meat and drinking of wine! "Let us eat and drink," you say, "for tomorrow we die!"

2 Corinthians 6:1-2 (NIV) As God's fellow workers we urge you not to receive God's grace in vain. 2 For he says, "In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you." I tell you, now is the time of God's favor, now is the day of salvation.
Isaiah 49:8 (NIV) This is what the LORD says: "In the time of my favor I will answer you, and in the day of salvation I will help you; I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people, to restore the land and to reassign its desolate inheritances,
2 Corinthians 6:16 (NIV) What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: "I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people."

Galatians 3:6-8 (NIV) Consider Abraham: "He believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness." 7 Understand, then, that those who believe are children of Abraham. 8 The Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: "All nations will be blessed through you."
Genesis 15:6 (NIV) Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness.

Galatians 3:10-13 (NIV) All who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law." 11 Clearly no one is justified before God by the law, because, "The righteous will live by faith." 12 The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, "The man who does these things will live by them." 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree."
Deuteronomy 27:26 (NIV) "Cursed is the man who does not uphold the words of this law by carrying them out." Then all the people shall say, "Amen!"
Habakkuk 2:4 (NIV) "See, he is puffed up; his desires are not upright-- but the righteous will live by his faith--

Genesis 12:7 (NIV) The LORD appeared to Abram and said, "To your offspring I will give this land." So he built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him.

Galatians 4:29-30 (NIV) At that time the son born in the ordinary way persecuted the son born by the power of the Spirit. It is the same now. 30 But what does the Scripture say? "Get rid of the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman's son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman's son."
Genesis 21:10 (NIV) and she said to Abraham, "Get rid of that slave woman and her son, for that slave woman's son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac."

Luke 10:7 (NIV) Stay in that house, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house.

The writer to the Hebrews
Hebrews 1:5-13 (NIV) For to which of the angels did God ever say, "You are my Son; today I have become your Father " ? Or again, "I will be his Father, and he will be my Son"? 6 And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, "Let all God's angels worship him." 7 In speaking of the angels he says, "He makes his angels winds, his servants flames of fire." 8 But about the Son he says, "Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever, and righteousness will be the scepter of your kingdom. 9 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy." 10 He also says, "In the beginning, O Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. 11 They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. 12 You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed. But you remain the same, and your years will never end." 13 To which of the angels did God ever say, "Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet"?

Psalms 102:25-27 (NIV) In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. 26 They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. Like clothing you will change them and they will be discarded. 27 But you remain the same, and your years will never end.
Psalms 110:1 (NIV) Of David. A psalm. The LORD says to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet."
Hebrews 2:6-8 (NIV) But there is a place where someone has testified: "What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? 7 You made him a little lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and honor 8 and put everything under his feet." In putting everything under him, God left nothing that is not subject to him. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to him.
Psalms 8:4-6 (NIV) what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? 5 You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. 6 You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet:
Hebrews 2:12-13 (NIV) He says, "I will declare your name to my brothers; in the presence of the congregation I will sing your praises." 13 And again, "I will put my trust in him." And again he says, "Here am I, and the children God has given me."
Psalms 22:22 (NIV) I will declare your name to my brothers; in the congregation I will praise you.
Isaiah 8:17 (NIV) I will wait for the LORD, who is hiding his face from the house of Jacob. I will put my trust in him.
Isaiah 8:18 (NIV) Here am I, and the children the LORD has given me. We are signs and symbols in Israel from the LORD Almighty, who dwells on Mount Zion.
Hebrews 3:7-11 (NIV) So, as the Holy Spirit says: "Today, if you hear his voice, 8 do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the desert, 9 where your fathers tested and tried me and for forty years saw what I did. 10 That is why I was angry with that generation, and I said, 'Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known my ways.' 11 So I declared on oath in my anger, 'They shall never enter my rest.'"
Psalms 95:7-11 (NIV) for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. Today, if you hear his voice, 8 do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah, as you did that day at Massah in the desert, 9 where your fathers tested and tried me, though they had seen what I did. 10 For forty years I was angry with that generation; I said, "They are a people whose hearts go astray, and they have not known my ways." 11 So I declared on oath in my anger, "They shall never enter my rest."
Hebrews 3:15 (NIV) As has just been said: "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion."
Psalms 95:7-8 (NIV) for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. Today, if you hear his voice, 8 do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah, as you did that day at Massah in the desert,
Hebrews 4:3 (NIV) Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said, "So I declared on oath in my anger, 'They shall never enter my rest.'" And yet his work has been finished since the creation of the world.
Psalms 95:11 (NIV) So I declared on oath in my anger, "They shall never enter my rest."
Hebrews 4:4 (NIV) For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: "And on the seventh day God rested from all his work."
Genesis 2:2 (NIV) By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.
Hebrews 4:7 (NIV) Therefore God again set a certain day, calling it Today, when a long time later he spoke through David, as was said before: "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts."
Psalms 95:7-8 (NIV) for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. Today, if you hear his voice, 8 do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah, as you did that day at Massah in the desert,
Hebrews 5:5-6 (NIV) So Christ also did not take upon himself the glory of becoming a high priest. But God said to him, "You are my Son; today I have become your Father." 6 And he says in another place, "You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek."
Psalms 2:7 (NIV) I will proclaim the decree of the LORD: He said to me, "You are my Son ; today I have become your Father.
Psalms 110:4 (NIV) The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind: "You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek."
Hebrews 6:13-14 (NIV) When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself, 14 saying, "I will surely bless you and give you many descendants."
Genesis 22:17 (NIV) I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies,
Hebrews 7:17-21 (NIV) For it is declared: "You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek." 18 The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless 19 (for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God. 20 And it was not without an oath! Others became priests without any oath, 21 but he became a priest with an oath when God said to him: "The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind: 'You are a priest forever.'"
Psalms 110:4 (NIV) The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind: "You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek."
Hebrews 8:5 (NIV) They serve at a sanctuary that is a copy and shadow of what is in heaven. This is why Moses was warned when he was about to build the tabernacle: "See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain."
Exodus 25:40 (NIV) See that you make them according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.
Hebrews 8:8-12 (NIV) But God found fault with the people and said : "The time is coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. 9 It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they did not remain faithful to my covenant, and I turned away from them, declares the Lord. 10 This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 11 No longer will a man teach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying, 'Know the Lord,' because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest. 12 For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more."
Jeremiah 31:31-34 (NIV) "The time is coming," declares the LORD, "when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them, " declares the LORD. 33 "This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time," declares the LORD. "I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 34 No longer will a man teach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,' because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest," declares the LORD. "For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more."
Hebrews 9:20 (NIV) He said, "This is the blood of the covenant, which God has commanded you to keep."
Exodus 24:8 (NIV) Moses then took the blood, sprinkled it on the people and said, "This is the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words."
Hebrews 10:5-7 (NIV) Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said: "Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me; 6 with burnt offerings and sin offerings you were not pleased. 7 Then I said, 'Here I am--it is written about me in the scroll-- I have come to do your will, O God.'"
Psalms 40:6-8 (NIV) Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but my ears you have pierced ; burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require. 7 Then I said, "Here I am, I have come-- it is written about me in the scroll. 8 I desire to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart."
Hebrews 10:15-17 (NIV) The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. First he says: 16 "This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds." 17 Then he adds: "Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more."
Jeremiah 31:33-34 (NIV) "This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time," declares the LORD.
Hebrews 10:30 (NIV) For we know him who said, "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," and again, "The Lord will judge his people."
Deuteronomy 32:35 (NIV) It is mine to avenge; I will repay. In due time their foot will slip; their day of disaster is near and their doom rushes upon them."
Deuteronomy 32:36 (NIV) The LORD will judge his people and have compassion on his servants when he sees their strength is gone and no one is left, slave or free.
Psalms 135:14 (NIV) For the LORD will vindicate his people and have compassion on his servants.
Hebrews 10:37-38 (NIV) For in just a very little while, "He who is coming will come and will not delay. 38 But my righteous one will live by faith. And if he shrinks back, I will not be pleased with him."
Habakkuk 2:3-4 (NIV) For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay. 4 "See, he is puffed up; his desires are not upright-- but the righteous will live by his faith--
Hebrews 11 (NIV) Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. 2 This is what the ancients were commended for. 3 By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. 4 By faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did. By faith he was commended as a righteous man, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith he still speaks, even though he is dead. 5 By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death; he could not be found, because God had taken him away. For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God. 6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. 7 By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that comes by faith. 8 By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. 9 By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God. 11 By faith Abraham, even though he was past age--and Sarah herself was barren--was enabled to become a father because he considered him faithful who had made the promise. 12 And so from this one man, and he as good as dead, came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore. 13 All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth. 14 People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. 15 If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 Instead, they were longing for a better country--a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them. 17 By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had received the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, 18 even though God had said to him, "It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned." 19 Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead, and figuratively speaking, he did receive Isaac back from death. 20 By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau in regard to their future. 21 By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of Joseph's sons, and worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff. 22 By faith Joseph, when his end was near, spoke about the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt and gave instructions about his bones. 23 By faith Moses' parents hid him for three months after he was born, because they saw he was no ordinary child, and they were not afraid of the king's edict. 24 By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh's daughter. 25 He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a short time. 26 He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward. 27 By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king's anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible. 28 By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of blood, so that the destroyer of the firstborn would not touch the firstborn of Israel. 29 By faith the people passed through the Red Sea as on dry land; but when the Egyptians tried to do so, they were drowned. 30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell, after the people had marched around them for seven days. 31 By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient. 32 And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel and the prophets, 33 who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions, 34 quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength; and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies. 35 Women received back their dead, raised to life again. Others were tortured and refused to be released, so that they might gain a better resurrection. 36 Some faced jeers and flogging, while still others were chained and put in prison. 37 They were stoned ; they were sawed in two; they were put to death by the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted and mistreated-- 38 the world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, and in caves and holes in the ground. 39 These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised. 40 God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.
Hebrews 11:17-18 (NIV) By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had received the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, 18 even though God had said to him, "It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned."
Genesis 21:12 (NIV) But God said to him, "Do not be so distressed about the boy and your maidservant. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.
Hebrews 12:5-6 (NIV) And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons: "My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, 6 because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son."
Proverbs 3:11-12 (NIV) My son, do not despise the Lord's discipline and do not resent his rebuke, 12 because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.
Hebrews 12:12-13 (NIV) Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees. 13 "Make level paths for your feet," so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.
Proverbs 4:26 (NIV) Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm.
Hebrews 12:18-21 (NIV) You have not come to a mountain that can be touched and that is burning with fire; to darkness, gloom and storm; 19 to a trumpet blast or to such a voice speaking words that those who heard it begged that no further word be spoken to them, 20 because they could not bear what was commanded: "If even an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned." 21 The sight was so terrifying that Moses said, "I am trembling with fear."
Exodus 19:12-13 (NIV) Put limits for the people around the mountain and tell them, 'Be careful that you do not go up the mountain or touch the foot of it. Whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death. 13 He shall surely be stoned or shot with arrows; not a hand is to be laid on him. Whether man or animal, he shall not be permitted to live.' Only when the ram's horn sounds a long blast may they go up to the mountain."
Deuteronomy 9:19 (NIV) I feared the anger and wrath of the LORD, for he was angry enough with you to destroy you. But again the LORD listened to me.
Hebrews 12:25-27 (NIV) See to it that you do not refuse him who speaks. If they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven? 26 At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, "Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens." 27 The words "once more" indicate the removing of what can be shaken--that is, created things--so that what cannot be shaken may remain.
Haggai 2:6 (NIV) "This is what the LORD Almighty says: 'In a little while I will once more shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land.
Hebrews 13:4-6 (NIV) Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral. 5 Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you." 6 So we say with confidence, "The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?"
Deuteronomy 31:6 (NIV) Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you."
Psalms 118:6-7 (NIV) The LORD is with me; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me? 7 The LORD is with me; he is my helper. I will look in triumph on my enemies.
Paul & Barnabus
Acts 13:47 (NIV) For this is what the Lord has commanded us: "'I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.'"
Isaiah 49:6 (NIV) he says: "It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring my salvation to the ends of the earth."
Stephen- a man full of God's grace and power:
Acts 7:2-7 (NIV) To this he replied: "Brothers and fathers, listen to me! The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham while he was still in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran. 3 'Leave your country and your people,' God said, 'and go to the land I will show you.' 4 "So he left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Haran. After the death of his father, God sent him to this land where you are now living. 5 He gave him no inheritance here, not even a foot of ground. But God promised him that he and his descendants after him would possess the land, even though at that time Abraham had no child. 6 God spoke to him in this way: 'Your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years. 7 But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves,' God said, 'and afterward they will come out of that country and worship me in this place.'
Genesis 12:1 (NIV) The LORD had said to Abram, "Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you.
Genesis 15:13-14 (NIV) Then the LORD said to him, "Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years. 14 But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great possessions.
Exodus 2:14 (NIV) The man said, "Who made you ruler and judge over us? Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian?" Then Moses was afraid and thought, "What I did must have become known."
Exodus 3:6 (NIV) Then he said, "I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob." At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God.
Exodus 3:5 (NIV) "Do not come any closer," God said. "Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground."
Exodus 3:7-8 (NIV) The LORD said, "I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. 8 So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey--the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.
Exodus 3:10 (NIV) So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt."
Deuteronomy 18:15 (NIV) The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own brothers. You must listen to him.
Exodus 32:1 (NIV) When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, "Come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don't know what has happened to him."
Amos 5:25-27 (NIV) "Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings forty years in the desert, O house of Israel? 26 You have lifted up the shrine of your king, the pedestal of your idols, the star of your god -- which you made for yourselves. 27 Therefore I will send you into exile beyond Damascus," says the LORD, whose name is God Almighty.
Isaiah 66:1-2 (NIV) This is what the LORD says: "Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. Where is the house you will build for me? Where will my resting place be? 2 Has not my hand made all these things, and so they came into being?" declares the LORD. "This is the one I esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word.
Acts 7 (NIV) Then the high priest asked him, "Are these charges true?" 2 To this he replied: "Brothers and fathers, listen to me! 7 But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves,' God said, 'and afterward they will come out of that country and worship me in this place.' 8 Then he gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision. And Abraham became the father of Isaac and circumcised him eight days after his birth. Later Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob became the father of the twelve patriarchs. 9 "Because the patriarchs were jealous of Joseph, they sold him as a slave into Egypt. But God was with him 10 and rescued him from all his troubles. He gave Joseph wisdom and enabled him to gain the goodwill of Pharaoh king of Egypt; so he made him ruler over Egypt and all his palace. 11 "Then a famine struck all Egypt and Canaan, bringing great suffering, and our fathers could not find food. 12 When Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent our fathers on their first visit. 13 On their second visit, Joseph told his brothers who he was, and Pharaoh learned about Joseph's family. 14 After this, Joseph sent for his father Jacob and his whole family, seventy-five in all. 15 Then Jacob went down to Egypt, where he and our fathers died. 16 Their bodies were brought back to Shechem and placed in the tomb that Abraham had bought from the sons of Hamor at Shechem for a certain sum of money. 17 "As the time drew near for God to fulfill his promise to Abraham, the number of our people in Egypt greatly increased. 18 Then another king, who knew nothing about Joseph, became ruler of Egypt. 19 He dealt treacherously with our people and oppressed our forefathers by forcing them to throw out their newborn babies so that they would die. 20 "At that time Moses was born, and he was no ordinary child. For three months he was cared for in his father's house. 21 When he was placed outside, Pharaoh's daughter took him and brought him up as her own son. 22 Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was powerful in speech and action. 23 "When Moses was forty years old, he decided to visit his fellow Israelites. 24 He saw one of them being mistreated by an Egyptian, so he went to his defense and avenged him by killing the Egyptian. 25 Moses thought that his own people would realize that God was using him to rescue them, but they did not. 26 The next day Moses came upon two Israelites who were fighting. He tried to reconcile them by saying, 'Men, you are brothers; why do you want to hurt each other?' 27 "But the man who was mistreating the other pushed Moses aside and said, 'Who made you ruler and judge over us? 28 Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?' 29 When Moses heard this, he fled to Midian, where he settled as a foreigner and had two sons. 30 "After forty years had passed, an angel appeared to Moses in the flames of a burning bush in the desert near Mount Sinai. 31 When he saw this, he was amazed at the sight. As he went over to look more closely, he heard the Lord's voice: 32 'I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.' Moses trembled with fear and did not dare to look. 33 "Then the Lord said to him, 'Take off your sandals; the place where you are standing is holy ground. 34 I have indeed seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their groaning and have come down to set them free. Now come, I will send you back to Egypt.' 35 "This is the same Moses whom they had rejected with the words, 'Who made you ruler and judge?' He was sent to be their ruler and deliverer by God himself, through the angel who appeared to him in the bush. 36 He led them out of Egypt and did wonders and miraculous signs in Egypt, at the Red Sea and for forty years in the desert. 37 "This is that Moses who told the Israelites, 'God will send you a prophet like me from your own people.' 38 He was in the assembly in the desert, with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our fathers; and he received living words to pass on to us. 39 "But our fathers refused to obey him. Instead, they rejected him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt. 40 They told Aaron, 'Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who led us out of Egypt--we don't know what has happened to him!' 41 That was the time they made an idol in the form of a calf. They brought sacrifices to it and held a celebration in honor of what their hands had made. 42 But God turned away and gave them over to the worship of the heavenly bodies. This agrees with what is written in the book of the prophets: "'Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings forty years in the desert, O house of Israel? 43 You have lifted up the shrine of Molech and the star of your god Rephan, the idols you made to worship. Therefore I will send you into exile' beyond Babylon. 44 "Our forefathers had the tabernacle of the Testimony with them in the desert. It had been made as God directed Moses, according to the pattern he had seen. 45 Having received the tabernacle, our fathers under Joshua brought it with them when they took the land from the nations God drove out before them. It remained in the land until the time of David, 46 who enjoyed God's favor and asked that he might provide a dwelling place for the God of Jacob. 47 But it was Solomon who built the house for him. 48 "However, the Most High does not live in houses made by men. As the prophet says: 49 "'Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house will you build for me? says the Lord. Or where will my resting place be? 50 Has not my hand made all these things?' 51 "You stiff-necked people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are just like your fathers: You always resist the Holy Spirit! 52 Was there ever a prophet your fathers did not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him-- 53 you who have received the law that was put into effect through angels but have not obeyed it." 54 When they heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him. 55 But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 56 "Look," he said, "I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God." 57 At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, 58 dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." 60 Then he fell on his knees and cried out, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." When he had said this, he fell asleep.
Peter, John and the people
Acts 4:25-26 (NIV) You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David: "'Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? 26 The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord and against his Anointed One.'
Psalms 2:1-2 (NIV) Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain? 2 The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the LORD and against his Anointed One.
The Crowd of Jewish people around Jesus Christ
John 6:31 (NIV) Our forefathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written: 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'"
Exodus 16:4 (NIV) Then the LORD said to Moses, "I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions.

This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship, 28 and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the book of Isaiah the prophet. 29 The Spirit told Philip, "Go to that chariot and stay near it." 30 Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. "Do you understand what you are reading?" Philip asked. 31 "How can I," he said, "unless someone explains it to me?" So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. 32 The eunuch was reading this passage of Scripture: "He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before the shearer is silent, so he did not open his mouth. 33 In his humiliation he was deprived of justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth." 34 The eunuch asked Philip, "Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?" 35 Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus.
